Walking in the Word
Think on These Things
Keep me safe, also, from willful sins;
don’t let them rule over me.
– Psalm 19:13 –
I enjoy reading the Psalms. There seems to be a Psalm for every situation I face in life. There are Psalms that teach us how to enjoy our walk with the Lord. Some tell us what to do when facing danger. Others tell us how to avoid getting into danger.
Psalm 19 gives us one way to avoid the danger of sinfulness. It is a beautiful Psalm about the Word of God and its importance for our sanctification. The writer concludes the Psalm with this thought: let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
These words express his aspiration. He recognizes his responsibility to be pure in his speech and thoughts. He is not asking the Lord to do this for him. He is affirming the desires of his heart.
He is allowing the Scripture to make his life pleasing before God. Our speech and thoughts are good indicators of the condition of our lives. Just as the lights in our cars tell if something is not right with the engine, so does our words and thoughts reveal the condition of our hearts and lives.
The Psalmist encourages us with a wonderful desire – a desire to glorify God. Our conduct tells about our character. The Psalmist says, keep me safe, also, from willful sins; don’t let them rule over me.
May we be found faithful and pure in his sight.
