Walking With the Lord
“And Enoch walked with God …”
– Gen 5:22 –
The Christian life is about a personal relationship in fellowship with God. Genesis, the book of beginnings, informs us that Adam and Eve “heard the voice of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day (Gen 3:8). Genesis also reminds us that Enoch and Noah walked with God (Gen. 5.22, 6:9).
Some Christians take pleasure in working for the Lord but the Lord takes pleasure when we are walking with Him (Ps 37:23). When Jesus called His disciples, he did not invite them to work with Him but to walk with Him.
The most prominent of those who walked with the Lord is Abraham (Gen. 17:1). The Scripture describes Christians as those who walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham (Rom 4:12). From Abraham’s example, we discover ways we can respond to God’s invitation to walk with Him.
When God spoke, Abraham listened;
When He promised, Abraham trusted;
When He commanded Abraham obeyed.
When we walk with the Lord, we never know exactly where He will take us. We do not know the circumstances we will encounter but we know we will experience great victories, because we listen, trust and obey the Lord. We’ve learned what it means to walk with the Lord.
Let us remind ourselves daily that being a Christian is not about working for the Lord; it is about walking with the Lord. John H. Sammis wrote these words:
When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
The joy of knowing the Lord is not in working for him but in walking with Him.
