Our Priceless Possession
“Store up treasures for yourself
in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy
and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
– Matthew 6:19-21 –
What is the most important thing in life? How often to we stop and consider that question? Most often, the most important thing gets buried between less important things. We must remind ourselves often of the danger of attending to what is urgent at the risk of neglecting that which is most important.
Jesus asked this very significant question: what will it profit a person to gain the whole world and lose their own soul, or what can a person give in exchange for the soul? (Mark 8:36- 37). This question is worthy of our utmost consideration. The soul is that intangible part of us and is who we really are. The Bible teaches that humans were created as body, soul and spirit (I Thess. 5:23).
According to Jesus’ teachings, the most valuable possession I have is my soul. All that the world offers do not compare to the worth of my soul. Therefore, the care of the soul should be of utmost importance our lives. Our body is temporary but it is our soul which is immortal.
When Jesus calls us to seek first the kingdom of God (Matt. 6:33), it is not an invitation to reject material things. Rather, He is teaching us to prioritize our lives – to put first things first. Although there is a world with things to possess, there is an eternity to face.
What will a person do if they wait until it is too late to get their soul right with their Maker? Your soul is your greatest possession do not trade it for the world. What will you do about your soul?
With eternity in view,
Pastor David Henry
