Hallelujah! What a Savior!
So when Jesus had received the sour wine,
He said, It is finished!
and bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
– John 19:30 –
A person’s last words are often significant information to us. On the day of his crucifixion, John recalls Jesus’ last words: it is finished! (John 19:30). What was finished? Jesus put an end to the sacrificial system of the Jewish/Christian religion. The writer to the book of Hebrews says:
Every priest stands ministering daily and offering
repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God. (Hebrews 10:11-12)
The sacrifice of Christ life for the sins of mankind, is far superior to the sacrifice of any animal. One of the themes of Hebrews is that Jesus is better. Here is a list of comparisons we find in Hebrews: Jesus has a better name, he offers a better way of living to his followers, he provides a better hope, a better covenant, a better sacrifice; he provides a better reward for those who trust in him, a better home for believers, a better resurrection, and better rewards.
He was also a better high priest. The high priest took the lives of animals but Jesus gave his life for our sins. The high priest sacrificed to cover sins, Jesus sacrificed to remove sins. The high priest was the only one who could enter the holiest place, Jesus made it possible for everyone to enter the holiest place. The high priest was representing man to God, but Jesus represented man to God and God to man.
The high priest needed the assistance of others, Jesus did it all by himself. The high priest offered sacrifices year after year, Jesus was sacrificed once and for all times never to be repeated. The high priest remain standing to offer sacrifice repeatedly, after Jesus offered himself as the sacrifice, he sat down. The songwriter spoke well when he said:
Lifted up was He to die;
“It is finished!” was His cry;
Now in Heav’n exalted high.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!
